What you can do to help save food from being thrown away

In recent years the government has been encouraging supermarkets to reduce food waste, this has helped to encourage greater cooperation between supermarkets and organisations like ours, who aim to redistribute this excess food, which is still very usable.

Tips for saving food from being wasted

  • Shop smart:

    • Check your cupboard before you shop.

    • Plan your meals before you shop.

    • Write a list and only buy what you need.

    • Don't shop when you're hungry!

  • When dishing up food go smaller rather than larger, they can always come back for more.

  • Save (and eat) leftovers.  Have a 'leftovers day' once a week.

  • Buy a slow cooker to make stews, soups and curry.

  • Store food in the right places.

  • Avoid clutter in your fridge, pantry and freezer so you can see what food you have.

  • Treat Best Before Dates as guidelines for quality (always adhere to Use By Dates).

  • Shop local and support your local independent growers.
